Winter ascent of Mount Malyovitsa
Winter in the Malyovitsa area offers countless opportunities for mountain activities: hiking, ski touring, mountaineering, courses and training…
Winter Malyovitsa is a terrain that demands attention to detail: a reliable weather forecast, proper equipment, and the ability to move through snowy trails and steep alpine sections. The reward, however, is immense — the views from the ridge are raw and constantly shifting, blending rock, snow-covered slopes and deep valleys.
This winter ascent is not just about “conquering a peak”, but about the entire experience: from the first frozen switchbacks above the alpine base, through the quiet stretches among the pines, to the wide snow terraces beneath the Kupenite and the final ridge climb towards the panoramic summit.
Along the way the route reveals iconic Rila summits such as Dvuglav, The Needle, Kupenite, Orlovets and Musala. On the opposite side — far below — lies the valley of the Rila Monastery, often hidden from the view of summer visitors.
For many people, such winter ascents are a natural continuation of their summer mountain experience — the moment when you realize that winter is not a season “outside the mountains”, but simply another stage, with different rules, different pace and a different kind of respect.
Taking part in an organized tour is also an opportunity to gain experience under the guidance of qualified mountain leaders — from using crampons and trekking poles, to moving safely on hard snow, reading terrain and practicing basic winter safety skills.
